"Altar" is a song by Poppy, released under the name That Poppy. It is the third track on her debut extended play Bubblebath. The audio currently has over 2 million views on YouTube.

Background[]

The song was first performed one month before its official release at Kyxy 96.5 on January 14th, 2016, this served as promotion for the EP Bubblebath. An audio video for the song was uploaded to Poppy's official VEVO channel on February 15th, 2016, days after its original release.

Theme[]

The song is about Poppy's obsession with a person that she loves, and wanting to run away with them. She sings about the girl that they're about to marry being a manipulator. Poppy demonstrates strong emotional ambitions towards the subject of the song, which is unusual because she shows little emotion in her YouTube videos.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
She'll take you straight to the bank
Don't marry that gutter skank
I know the pressure is high and she's gonna cry
But that old news needs to die

[Chorus]
You're standing at the altar, baby
I'm coming straight for you
The getaway car is waiting and we'll ride into the blue
Church bells don't ring, church bells don't ring too soon
You're standing at the altar, I'm coming for you

[Verse 2]
I know that she has a gun, it's an emotional one
And in your vulnerable state, she loves to manipulate
And when you're weak and in pain, she comes around again

[Chorus]
You're standing at the altar, baby
I'm coming straight for you
The getaway car is waiting and we'll ride into the blue
Church bells don't ring, church bells don't ring too soon
You're standing at the altar, I'm coming for you

[Bridge]
She'll never love you like I love you
'Cause we were born to be together, babe
So don't you leave me for another
Don't say "I do"
You're standing at the altar, baby
I'm coming straight for you

[Chorus]
You're standing at the altar, baby
I'm coming straight for you
The getaway car is waiting and we'll ride into the blue
Church bells don't ring, church bells don't ring too soon
You're standing at the altar (Oh)
You're standing at the altar, baby
I'm coming straight for you (Straight for you)
The getaway car is waiting and we'll ride into the blue
Church bells don't ring, church bells don't ring too soon
You're standing at the altar, I'm coming for you

Reception[]

Little individual reviews followed the release of "Altar", as the track was mostly overshadowed by the previous two Bubblebath hits "Money" and "Lowlife". However, Tyler Peterson of UQMUSIC stated in a review that "Money" and "Altar" in particular were "retro-bangers".[1]

Trivia[]

  • The song's second verse features a brief reggae beat similar to that heard in "Lowlife".
  • This is the shortest song on Bubblebath, being 2:40 long.
