"As Strange As It Seems" is a song by Poppy from her fourth studio album Flux. It is the eighth track on the album.
Background[]
The song's title was revealed along with the tracklist to Flux on July 30th, 2021.
On September 26th, 2021, Chris Greatti shared a snippet of an acoustic demo of the song on his Instagram story. The demo was recorded on May 14th, 2020, the "day [they] wrote it".[1][2]
Theme[]
In an interview with Spin, Poppy revealed that the song is special to her, calling it "a song that you want to drive to and also cry to".[3]
Similar to "On the Level", the song uses being a passenger a car as a metaphor for a relationship. Poppy details the danger the driver is putting her in as a passenger. She laments on how her partner has treated her, and reflects on their relationship and pensively recognizes the person she has become due to this.
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
I was a passenger in a speeding car
You showed no regard for me, for me
I was a careful girl with a broken heart
You showed no regard for me, for me
[Chorus]
What did I get me into, into?
Why did I let you into me?
What did I get me into, into?
What did you turn me into casually?
As true as something you won't believe
As strange as it seems
[Verse 2]
Staring at the center of the end of the road
With the softest voice you never heard at all
I'm hanging on the steering wheel of a speeding car
I've got no regard for me, for me
[Chorus]
What did I get me into, into?
Why did I let you into me?
What did I get me into, into?
What did you turn me into casually?
As true as something you won't believe
As strange as it seems
[Outro]
As true as something you won't believe
As strange as it seems
