Theme[]
"Church Outfit" is about how Poppy aspires to have her fashion appear impeccable and elegant, similar to proper attire worn to a church service. She also sings about how she doesn't care if her outfit or personality angers or offends one, as it is a manifestation of her personal statement and protest. The song exhibits thematic similarities with "Fashion After All" from Am I a Girl? as both songs describe having aspirations of high standards of fashion and using said fashion as a personal statement and protest.
”Church Outfit” also talks about how everyone should be free to wear the outfits they want and she should not be pegged for wearing controversial clothing because “life is a commercial for death” anyway and fleeting issues like fashion do not matter, so she has no issues with using fashion to display her strength and with using if as a sort of weapon.
Lyrics[]
[Chorus]
This is the dress I want to be buried in
Leave the rings, I might need them
Unholy water, take a sip
This is my church outfit
[Verse]
Life is a commercial for death
Anger is something I work to manifest
Life is a commercial for death
And you're hypnotized by the advertisement
I'll dress to the nines, show up on time
You can wear whatever you like
Dress to the nines, show up on time
You can wear whatever you like
[Chorus]
This is the dress I want to be buried in
Leave the rings, I might need them
Unholy water, take a sip
This is my church outfit
[Outro]
It's my confession and my testament
Don't need your weapons, I got my own
And you said I couldn't commit
This is my church outfit
It's my confession and my testament
Don't need your weapons, I got my own
And you said I couldn't commit
This is my church outfit
