Background[]
Poppy first teased the single on August 12th, 2019, posting a picture on social media with the caption "8.22 ๐๐ฑ๐นโ๏ธ". On August 15th, 2019, she posted another picture with the caption ".....gravedigger โ๏ธ๐นโฐ๏ธ 8.22". She revealed the song's title on August 19th, 2019, along with two lines from the song.
Theme[]
"Concrete" sees Poppy wishing to be buried in the ground and paved over with concrete, turning her into a street. The chorus and verse show Poppy expressing cannibalistic desires; she dismisses the flavors of food items such as candy and coffee, calling them "lifeless", while stating that her true craving is "young blood".
In an interview with Alternative Press, Poppy explained that the song is "about wanting to be buried underground, killing off an older version of yourself". She described the song as the "cousin" of "X", and said that the two songs were "written around a similar time".[1]
Musically, the song continues Poppy's venture into songs she describes as "Poppymetal"[2] that alternate between heavy metal and pop music, following the songs "X" and "Play Destroy" from her album Am I a Girl?, as well as the song "Scary Mask" from her Choke EP.
Lyrics[]
[Intro]
Bury me six feet deep, bury me six feet deep
Bury me six feet deep, bury me six feet deep
Bury me six feet deep, cover me in concrete
Turn me into a street
Bury me six feet deep, cover me in concrete
Turn me into a street
[Chorus]
Chewy, chewy, yummy, yummy, yummy
Sharp and pointy, yummy, yummy, yummy
Break me off a piece of that tasty treat
Sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams
Watch me while I sleep for eternity
[Post-Chorus]
Bury me six feet deep, cover me in concrete
Turn me into a street
(Ah, ah)
[Verse]
Some people like candy
Some people like coffee
But these lifeless flavors don't satisfy me (Ooh)
I tried to eat ice cream (Ooh)
I tried to drink tea (La-la-la-la)
But I need the taste of young blood in my teeth
(Ooh, ah)
[Chorus]
Chewy, chewy, yummy, yummy, yummy
Sharp and pointy, yummy, yummy, yummy
Break me off a piece of that tasty treat
Sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams
Watch me while I sleep for eternity
Sugar in my teeth, demons in my dreams
Watch me while I sleep for eternity
[Break]
Poppy, Poppy, Poppy
Poppy, Poppy, Poppy
[Outro]
Bury me six feet deep and just cover me in concrete, please
Turn me into a street, turn me into a street
I don't wanna wait forever and ever, please
Turn me into a street, turn me into a street (Ah, ooh)
Turn me into a street, turn me into a street (Ah, ooh)
(Poppy, Poppy, Poppy, Poppy)
Turn me into a street, turn me into a street
