"Chewing Gum" is a song by Poppy.

Background

The song was uploaded to Poppy's SoundCloud on May 17th, 2016 for around 30 minutes before being deleted. Some managed to download it after the song was deleted; however, the ending was slightly cut off. Shortly after, the full song was uploaded onto SoundCloud.

Poppy later confirmed that the track was supposed to be the B-side to Bubblebath.[1] Poppy revealed in April 2020 that her upload of the song was taken down by her label at the time, Island Records.[[2]

Theme

"Chewing Gum" is about Poppy meeting a boy on the internet. She supposedly falls in love with him as he continually gives her attention. Due to this, Poppy doesn't want him to ever leave her. As the relationship progresses, she continues to cling on to the idea of him never leaving her. She compares the boy to chewing gum; if he leaves her and/or makes her hate him, she'll "spit him out", this being a metaphor for cutting him out of her life.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I like myself again
I finally found a friend
His name's Nobody and he loves me
I found him on the web
The world wide internet
And on the day we met
I felt lovely

[Pre-Chorus 1]
I hope you never try to leave me

[Chorus]
'Cause I want you under my thumb
I'm just a girl and I want to have fun
So don't make me hate you I, won't hesitate to
Spit you out like old chewing gum
(I love chewing gum)

[Verse 2]
My life feels like a dream
Now that he's on my team
I melt like ice cream
When he loves me
He calls me poppy seed
And treats me like a queen
He's everything I need
So I tell him

[Pre-Chorus 2]
I know you'll never try to leave me

[Chorus]
'Cause I've got you under my thumb
I'm just a girl and I want to have fun
So don't make me hate you I, won't hesitate to
Spit you out like old chewing gum
(I love chewing gum)

[Bridge]
Am I just insecure?
Are we being immature?
Who knows for sure? (Who knows for sure?)
At least I got my boy and I tell him

[Outro]
That I've got you under my thumb
I'm just a girl and I want to have fun (Have fun)
So don't make me hate you I, won't hesitate to
Spit you out like old chewing gum
(I love chewing gum)
(I love chewing gum)
So don't make me hate you I, won't hesitate to
Spit you out like old chewing gum
(I love chewing gum)
