Genesis 1 (subtitled A Poppy Graphic Novel) is a graphic novel written by Poppy, Titanic Sinclair and Ryan Cady. It was first released to bookstores on July 10th, 2019, while online orders of the album shipped on July 23rd, 2019. There is also a deluxe edition of the graphic novel limited to 500 copies, which is in an oversized 9x15 hardcover slipcase that comes with an exclusive print and vinyl. This deluxe edition is also signed by Poppy.
The graphic novel is bundled with an ambient album titled I C U (Music to Read To), which serves as the soundtrack to the novel.
"Is she a girl? Is she a machine? Is she humanity's redemption, or its damnation? Don't be scared -- either way, she is Poppy...and you love Poppy. Witness the genesis of the internet phenomenon in this original graphic novel, bundled with a brand new Album only available here."
Poppy had previously stated in an interview with NME that she was writing a novel, commenting that "it's going to be good". Later in 2018, she revealed in the Poppy.Church Atrium that the book would be about herself. The book was officially announced and made available for pre-ordering on January 8th, 2019, with an initial release date of July 9th, 2019. The book is described as an "origin story" for Poppy. On the day of the book's release in comic book stores, Poppy promoted the book in her video "Theories About Me", in which she explained that while many people theorize about her origins, the book contains the definitive story of how she came into the world.
Poppy first announced a 4-city book signing tour to promote Genesis 1 on August 5th, 2019. However, with the exception of the London date on August 26th, 2019, the other three dates were intended to be rescheduled to a later date due to conflicts with travel. As of 2020, no further announcement on the rescheduled dates has been made, and it is assumed that the following three dates were canceled.
- The title of the graphic novel, Genesis 1, is a reference to the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Hebrew Bible. Similarly, her previous book, The Gospel of Poppy, was a parody of the Bible.
