Background[]

On June 22nd, 2021, Poppy posted a cryptic teaser to her social media.[1] On June 24th, Poppy posted another teaser on her social media[2] with the caption "Her - 6/30 9am pst". The following day, Poppy officially announced the song on Instagram, "hi gram, hope you're well. HER comes out on Wednesday it's one of the most significant songs... to me.. as a Poppy. Its 2 yrs old but still as important to me as it was the day I wrote it. 🏵️"[3]

Theme[]

"Her" tackles similar themes exhibited on Poppy's third studio album I Disagree, recollecting feelings of being boxed in and wishing to break free.

Similar to "Anything Like Me", "Her" could allude to the lawsuit Poppy and her former collaborative and romantic partner Titanic Sinclair had filed against them by Mars Argo. In the lawsuit, Argo had claimed that Poppy was a copy of her persona.

Another possible allusion in the song could be about Poppy's relationship with Sinclair and the aftermath of them splitting both romantically and collaboratively. Poppy has stated that Sinclair manipulated and controlled her in the past, notably stating that she had been "trapped in a mess that [she] needed to dig [her] way out of".[4][5] In the aftermath of the split, rumors and leaked personal content of Poppy's began to spread from Sinclair.[6] Despite this, Poppy has remained authentically true to herself and often expresses having moved on from past events.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Give her a face
Give her a name
That isn't hers
Then make her yours
Say she's adored
Call her a whore
Then pick her up
Throw her on the floor

[Chorus]
I'm getting to know her
And all of her anger
You won't recognize her
If you encountered
I'm getting to know her
And all of her anger
Picked herself up
Put her back together

[Verse 2]
Give her a taste
Take it away
Under your thumb
Tell her to stay
Don't say a word
Don't disobey
When she woke up
She ran away

[Chorus]
I'm getting to know her
And all of her anger
You won't recognize her
If you encountered
I'm getting to know her
And all of her anger
Picked herself up
Put her back together

[Bridge]
Run your mouth to keep her scared
You expected her to care
But when her mind made up
You were illfully prepared

[Verse 3]
Have you observed?
And what have you learned?
The girl that you knew
Will never be yours

[Chorus]
I'm getting to know her
And all of her anger
You won't recognize her
If you encountered
I'm getting to know her
And all of her anger
Picked herself up
Put her back together
