Background[]

Tease (2016-2017)[]

What likely appears to be a visualizer or audio video was probably shoot for this song, since Poppy posted on her now-deleted Twitter account on December 12th, 2016 "Poppy Music Video✔️", most likely referencing this song's title or being an early version of the title,[1] as also makeup artist Daria Solovyeva had posted on her own Instagram account on February 16th, 2016 a picture taken by herself of Poppy's look for the single cover with the caption "[Throwback to] || "IM POPPY" video shoot", further confirming the existence of scrapped media for the song.[2] It could be thought that it's a visualizer or an audio video instead of a music video since Poppy said a music video was never shoot for the song on a Q&A on a Discord group in 2020.[3]

On January 10th, 2017 it was tweeted on Poppy's Twitter account "P - O - P - P - Y! I'm Poppy!", this would end up being the song's chorus as this was a tease for the song.[4]

On January 21st, 2017 it waz tweeted on Poppy's Twitter account teasing the release date of the song "January 31st, 2017".[5] Later, on January 26th, 2017 the single artwork was revealed on Poppy's social media.[6] On the release day instead the song was never released. The next day, Charlotte, a recurring character on Poppy's YouTube channel, "leaked" a snippet of the song in the video "I Have Poppy's New Song". Poppy can be heard in the background exclaiming: "Charlotte, why are you doing this? They told me I couldn't release it today!". The release date was then pushed back to February 14th, 2017.[citation needed]

Release[]

An auto-generated by YouTube video of the audio of the song was accidentally uploaded on February 7th, 2017, days before the song's official release date.[7] The video appears to have been made unlisted until the song's official release date.

The song was finally released on the new selected released date as February 14th, 2017 alongside a lyric video using the same picture of the monitor seen in the video "Transmission" as later re-used for the character Computer Boy in subsequent videos.

In October 2017, as the song was released as a single with her former stage name "That Poppy", the song would be released as "Poppy" for the Poppy.Computer album release.

State (since 2022)[]

On January 25th, 2022 the single form of the song was removed from Poppy's artist page on streaming services and re-added under a separate That Poppy artist page. Poppy's EP Bubblebath had previously been added to this page in 2019. On April 9th, 2024 this action was reverted, leaving the EP and the single form of the song being re-added to the Poppy profile.

Trivia[]

  • When this song was released, "That Poppy" was one of the most searched artists on iTunes.[10]
  • The song's title was referenced in an example request for the Apple HomePod at Apple's WWDC 2017 keynote.[11] Phil Schiller, the Senior Vice President of Apple, recommended the audience to check out the song if they were unfamiliar with it.
  • The .yric video shortened the song for 52 seconds
  • This song's release date is wrongfully listed as if it was released on the original release date of January 31st, 2017 instead of the actual release date of February 14th, 2017 in almost all streaming platforms.[12]
  • The single CD is the only physical release to have Poppy's previous stage name, That Poppy, on it.[13][14][15][16]
    • The CD marked the first single to have a physical CD.
  • The outfit Poppy wears in the single artwork is the same one she wears in her video "I Like Magic".
  • Before the bridge, a coin sound effect from the video game Super Mario Bros. can be heard.
  • Samantha Burkhart is currently credited as Poppy's stylist in the description of the lyric video, even though Poppy doesn't appear on it.
    • This was likely a mistake as the description has been changed several times to include tour dates, albeit including the credits of Titanic Sinclair as director and Burkhart as stylist at the bottom of each video's description.[citation needed]
  • Daria Solovyeva was Poppy's hairstylist for the cover art photoshoot, while Jenna Nelson was her makeup artist.[citation needed]
  • In January 2021, the song would become a trend on Chinese video-sharing platform TikTok. Poppy also reposted popular videos using the sound on both her Instagram and official TikTok.
