"Lowlife" is a song by Poppy. It was released under the stage name "That Poppy" on 2016 and later changed to "Poppy" on 2024. It served as the lead single from her debut extended play Bubblebath and is the first track on the EP. It was released on July 24th, 2015 alongside a music video. The music video currently has over 72 million views on YouTube, being Poppy's most watched video on her YouTube channel. An acoustic version was also released onto Poppy's YouTube channel currently containing over 5 million views.
Two remixes of the song were released after the original song's release. One with rapper Travis Mills released on October 2015 and the other on April 2016 by DJ Slushii.
Background
Recording (2014-2015)
The song started its recording production apparently in 2014 and the first version demo of the song was recorded in collaboration with the rapper Travis Mills as a mutual friend of both recommended as Poppy then sent the demo to Travis and then he wrote and recorded his own verse to it.[1][2] Titanic Sinclair has stated in a 2017 interview that he met Poppy by listening to the demo of this song along with other unknown demo Poppy songs;[3] according to him, the first time he heard the demo he imaginated how a music video for it would be as he said that that never happened to him before.[4] The first version demo was sometime later re-recorded and Travis Mills was ultimately scrapped off the song and the re-record without Mills is the released version of the song[1], it is speculated that the song ended its production sometime in 2015.
Tease (2015)
On April 22nd, 2015 an announcement was posted to Poppy's social media convocating her fans to "rage with her" in an upcoming Poppy music video, fans could apply to participate on the music video by sending a photo of themselves, age and full contact information to the mail provided on the same post. It was also announced that it was going to take place at Los Angeles and was going to take place on May 2nd, 2015.[5]
The song would be officially announced ten days before its release on July 14th, 2015 through Poppy's social media accounts along with the cover art and release date of the song, the music video would also be released alongside the song.[6] The same day, the second "Charlotte Interviews Poppy" video-part series was uploaded to Poppy's channel in which Poppy was interviewed by the mannequin amd recurrent character in Poppy's videos Charlotte about the music video of the song.
The song's music video would be teased on Poppy's and Island Records' social media accounts, including Poppy's YouTube channel, with three teasers of the music video containing stems of the song as background music. The first teaser was published to social media on July 16th, 2015 and showed a longer shot of the beginning of the music video in which Poppy's white and green shoes can be seen along with a radio as Poppy press the a button on it and the music starts playing, in the teaser Poppy can be seen walking away which wasn't shown in the final music video.[7] Sometime after the second teaser was posted, on it in only a shot of Poppy's bunny slippers seen in the music video were seen while Poppy was doing little movements with her feet. The third and final teaser was posted hours before the music video's release, on July 24th, 2015, Poppy was seen with the devil as both were seen still while the camera came closer.[8][9]
Versions (2015-2016)
On September 18th, 2015 an acoustic version of the song was released to YouTube with only a music video featuring two bodysuit dancers as Poppy sings.
After Travis Mills was scrapped from the original version of the song and the final version of the song was released, sometime later he recorded a verse for a remix of the song with the finished version of the song. Three months after the song's release, on October 13th, 2015 Poppy would announce a remix for the song along with the rapper Travis Mills through her social media accounts, the remix was announced along with the artwork. The remix of the song was released on October 16th, 2015 to all streaming platforms, alongside an audio video.[10] However, two months after its release[11], the audio video was made unlisted and the remix was made unavailable from every streaming platform for unknown reasons.
On March the song received airtime multiple radio stations, starting on on Disney Radio having a clean version of the song called "Lowlife (RD Version)" (Radio Disney Version) airtimed in US for the first time on March 7th, 2016[12], and later it impacted on US radio the next day.[13]
A second remix was later made in collaboration with the DJ Slushii, it started to be teased on April 25th, 2016 when a teaser video was uploaded into Poppy's Twitter with the caption "4/27 💟🍭🌼✨💅🏻💗🍬💟@ thatPoppy + + @ SlushiiMusic 💟🍭🌼✨💅🏻💗🍬💟 #thatpoppy #slushii", the post was later deleted a day later.[14] The teaser video contained the same video format used for the video uploaded into Titanic Sinclair's YouTube channel "Poppy puts you to sleep" and also for all the Poppy.Computer audio videos as well as for Poppy.Computer Tour visuals. The same day the tweet was deleted a preview video was uploaded into Poppy's YouTube channel, which shows Poppy with the same radio shown in the beginning of the music video for the song while wearing what appears to be a bikini as a snippet of the remix made by Slushii was played.[15][16][17] It was premiered at the YouTube channel Proximity on April 27th, 2016[18][19] and was later officially released to all streaming platforms on April 29th, 2016. The audio video uploaded to Proximity currently has over 1 million views on YouTube.[19] This remix would later made an appearance on the Island Records compilation Island Life Dance, Vol. 2, released on May 13th, 2016.[20][21] An official audio video was later released onto Slushii's YouTube channel on October 14th, 2016.[22]
On June 10th, 2016 a new version of the EP Bubblebath was released to all streaming platforms and replacing the first version of the EP released back on February, the second version of the EP contains a new version of the track "Money" having some slight differences such as volume, length and saturation changes and "Lowlife" was also changed to a sightly different version. The new version of "Lowlife" had a less saturated instrumental and instead it was made slightly bass boosted, the saturation in Poppy's vocals was completely taken off alongside unknown-origin noises that could be heard in the background of the song. The first released mix of the song is featured on the music video for the song and is currently the only official upload available of the first mix.
State (2018-2024)
Sometime in early July 2018 "Lowlife", along with the other songs from Bubblebath, were removed from Poppy's artist page on streaming services and re-added under a separate "That Poppy" artist page. This would also happen with the "Lowlife" Slushii remix sometime in 2018 and the single version of "I'm Poppy" on 2022. However, later on April 9th, 2024 this action was reversed and both the EP and the two singles were re-added to Poppy's artist page instead of the "That Poppy" artist page as the "That Poppy" artist page would be deleted from all streaming platforms.
On April 1st, 2020, Poppy stated that she does not play "Lowlife" live anymore because the song gives her post-traumatic stress disorder.[23]
"[It] gives me [post-traumatic stress disorder]. Long story involved. I'll tell it some day. I'm proud of the song but also it's not where my heart is [right now]." - Poppy at Discord Q&A.
On July 23rd, 2021 the audio video of the Travis Mills remix was made private by YouTube due to a change on its policies which caused all of the unlisted videos on YouTube uploaded before the year 2017 being changed to private.[24]
Theme
"The song is about me living on my own for quite a while and the ups and downs of it all. Then meeting someone when you're in a very rough spot. And that certain person, whether it's a friend or a lover, shaking up your world and making the worst time actually the best time." - Poppy in an interview with Teen Vogue[25]
The track carries heavy themes about loneliness and describes Poppy's life while living alone. She addresses a person or thing that brought her happiness during this lonely period of her life. The reggae beat of the song contrasts with the message, giving the initial depressing undertone of the track more of an energetic vibe.
Music Video
The music video begins with a shot of Poppy sitting in the middle of a white triangle in the traditional pose of Baphomet in Christianity. Two white bodysuit dancers are at her sides. As the video progresses, it cuts to several shots of people in wheelchairs (implied to be Them) breathing through masks and discussing the artist behind her back. Several seconds into the video, the Devil (portrayed by Brandon Burtis) appears in several shots alongside Poppy. The Devil makes strange facial expressions and poses with Poppy in what appears to be a hatched egg, as well as on opposite ends of a table. While conversing on the table, the Devil makes sexually suggestive gestures which Poppy attempts to ignore. Poppy's discomfort culminates when the Devil puts a banana in his mouth and makes a gesture imitating fellatio. Poppy then leaves the studio, with the Devil following her angrily until she exits the building.
When she leaves the building, the Devil decides to give up and walks away. Outside, many starstruck fans await her appearance and hold photographs of the singer in front of her. Poppy pulls a paintbrush with with red paint and drags it across their sheets before entering a van. In the van, two women wait and one of them gives her an oxygen mask possibly containing some kind of a drug. She then walks back into the building at the set where she pushes away the men in wheelchairs, symbolizing that she is rejecting their control. At the end of the video, she blocks the camera with her hands.
Throughout the music video, there are strong Illuminati and Satanic symbols such as triangles representing the Eye of Providence, skulls, and Masonic colors.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Yeah
Old suitcase, clean getaway
I'm the one who takes the blame again
New day but the same lines
I feel like a victim of the dollar sign (sign)
[Pre-Chorus]
All these years on my own (own)
Fight my fight all alone (alone)
'Til you came, don't you know?
Don't you know?
[Chorus]
Baby, you're the highlight of my lowlife, ey (Lowlife, lowlife)
Take a shitty day and make it alright, yeah, alright
Oh, in every circumstance
Yeah, you make the difference
Baby, you're the highlight of my lowlife, lowlife (Lowlife)
(Lowlife, lowlife)
[Verse 2]
This bad taste, these headaches
Wake up on the floor again, ah, yeah
My torn dress, this failed test
Soon they will be erased
[Pre-Chorus]
All these years on my own (own)
Fight my fight all alone (alone)
'Til you came, don't you know?
Don't you know?
[Chorus]
Baby, you're the highlight of my lowlife, ey (Lowlife, lowlife)
Take a shitty day and make it alright, yeah, alright
Oh, in every circumstance
Yeah, you make the difference
Baby, you're the highlight of my lowlife, lowlife (lowlife)
[Bridge]
And I get so lonely

"Can you come to my chateau?"
Take me in your arms and
Hold me tight, yeah, pull me close

Reception
Since its release, "Lowlife" has mostly received exceedingly positive reviews from critics. The music video for for this song is currently Poppy's most-viewed music video on YouTube. "Lowlife" is also one of Poppy's most-streamed songs on Spotify and has received airtime on BBC Radio.[26] The Slushii remix of the song was also added temporarily on the Spotify playlist "FRESH EDM", being Poppy's first song to be added to an Spotify playlist.[27] "Lowlife" was featured on the compilation album Now That's What I Call Music! 58 in North America, and was nominated for a TigerBeat "19 Under 19 - Most Influential Song" award in September 2016.[28] PopularTV particularly described "Lowlife" as a song that "will make you want to break out your old checkered Vans and hang with the skater boys".[29]
Trivia
- The music video was directed by Titanic Sinclair.
- The music video was shot on May 2nd, 2015.[5]
- Through the complete last chorus of the song, a crowd cheering can be slightly heard.
- The scene shown in the timestamp 1:41 is repeated in the timestamp 2:02 of the music video.
- The scene in the music video where Poppy signs fans' pictures of her with red paint was most likely inspired by a scene in the 1997 movie The Fifth Element.[30]
- These "autographed" pictures from the music video later made an appearance in Poppy's video "Everybody Is Boring".
- The picture used was taken by Andrew Zaeh and published via Sticks & Stones Agency on July 2014.
- Matt Bennett, a friend of Titanic Sinclair, portrays one of the fans convocated for the video. Sinclair himself also appears in the music video as one of the people in the studio.[31]
- Alex Mixter, the younger brother of Titanic Sinclair, makes an appearance as an extra driving the van Poppy gets into.[32]
- Additionally, Rene Napoli and Jimmy Redhawk James portray two members of Them confined to wheelchairs.[31]
- This is one of only thirteen Poppy songs to be marked explicit on most music streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify, the others being "American Kids", "Chic Chick", "FYB", "Shapes", "Stagger", "They'll Just Love You", "Knockoff", "Flicker", "Suffocate", "They're All Around Us", "Have You Had Enough?" and "From Me to U".
- This is the first Poppy song to have an official clean version released, with the second being "FYB". The clean version replaces the word "shitty" with "rotten". This version is no longer available on most streaming services, but is still available on sites such as Amazon Music, where it is included on NOW That's What I Call Music, Vol. 58.[33]
- The Slushii Remix uses this clean version.
- The Radio Disney version has a different version of this clean version, still having the word "shitty" replaced by "rotten" but also having the phrases "wake up on the floor again, ah, yeah, my torn dress, this failed test" replaced by "wake up too late again, ah, yeah, my white dress, these questions".
- This change could be mostly because this radio station is mostly directed to children and the "bad influence" stuff should be changed.
- The Radio Disney version was currently not found on high quality of audio.
- Though "Immature Couture", "Scary Mask", "All the Things She Said" and "Dark Dark World" contain profanity, they are not marked explicit on music streaming services.
- The Travis Mills remix "Lowlife" marks the first Poppy era song to contain a feature, the second being "My Style" featuring Charlotte, the third being "Time Is Up" featuring Diplo, the fourth being "Aristocrat" featuring Garibay, the fifth being "Play Destroy" featuring Grimes, the sixth being "Scary Mask" featuring Fever 333, and the seventh being "Screammm" featuring GASM.
- To date, the Travis Mills remix of this song and "Everybody Wants to Be Poppy" are the only Poppy era songs that were removed from streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify.
- The outfit Poppy wears in the single artwork for the Travis Mills remix is the same one she wears in her video "Umbrella", in her 2015 performance at Corona Capital Festival, in her interview with 92.3 AMP Radio, for her collaborative videos with iHeartRadio "That Poppy Has An Important Message" and "That Poppy's Cute Puppy Party | Exclusive" and also for her performance and interview for Tiger Beat.
- The Travis Mills remix was intended to have a music video, but it never materialized.[34]
- The artwork at the Travis Mills remix audio video does not contain the parental advisory explicit content sign, also the brightness is lowered.[10]
- The Travis Mills remix is 4 seconds longer than the original version of the song without featuring him. The remix is 4 seconds longer because the song has more reverb at the last part of the song, being these 4 seconds almost just silence.
- The Travis Mills remix also features a slightly rougher mix through the song, the instrumental being slightly more saturated than the original version and some stems such as the melody stems and reggae guitar beat having its volume higher than the original version of the song.
- In the first mix's version the instrumental is more saturated and at the part of the instrumental of the bridge an unknown-origin high-pitched sound can be heard through it. This sound could have possibly been added to embrace the "talking" of the devil as he appears to be angry and complaining to Poppy at that part of the music video. Also during the pre-chorus and chorus, Poppy's vocals could be heard being saturated, this was completely taken off on the second mix released on June 2016.
- The high-pitched sound is not heard on the version used in streaming platforms.
- This same unknown-origin sound can also be heard some times through the whole song.
- The clean version of the song has the backing the vocals' volume raised at each chorus part.
- The line "take a shitty day" was re-recorded entirely instead of just re-recording the "shitty day" part.
- The outfit used in the music video for the acoustic version of the song is the same she used when she performed live at Social Hall in December 3rd, 2015 and for her attendance at Jared's Way Too Wonderland event.
- On March 8th, 2016 if this song was recognized by the song-recognizer app Shazam it would redirect you to the now lost video uploaded to Poppy's channel titled "Shazam" in which Poppy thanked the listener for listening to her song "Lowlife" on the app Shazam.
- Poppy wore the cyan "eye dress" from the music video at the 2016 iHeartRadio Music Awards and to perform at TigerHeat Club on March 11th, 2016.
- Poppy has stated that "Lowlife" is special for her as it is her favorite song from Bubblebath along with "Money".[35]
- Poppy made a now-privated video titled "How to Play Lowlife", which presented itself as a tutorial on how to play the song.
- The song was used in the episode 1 of the fifth season of the MTV show "Catfish: The TV Show".[36][37]
- In the title of the audio video for the Slushii remix, the song's title is wrongfully stylized as "Low Life" instead of "Lowlife".[22]
- Titanic Sinclair has stated that the music video for "Bleach Blonde Baby" is a "visual sequel" to the music video for "Lowlife".
- Poppy performed a stripped-down version of "Lowlife" live on her performance of April 27th, 2018.
- On the DJ set produced by Poppy and uploaded to a SoundCloud account under the name of Charlotte titled "NOISE SET", the vocals of Poppy from "Lowlife" were used since the first verse until the second chorus. The vocals can be heard in the minute 22:58.[38]
- This SoundCloud account was an official account runned by Titanic Sinclair.[39]
- While the vocals are heard, the instrumental can also be slightly heard. This was likely how the song was recorded back in 2014-2015, due to the instrumental being played while the vocals are sung as this is a common form of recording songs.
- This set was played live at VidCon on July 11th, 2019.
- The music video's titled was changed from "That Poppy - Lowlife" to "That Poppy - Lowlife (Official Video)" in mid-2020.
