"Meat" is a song by Poppy from her second extended play Choke. It is the fourth track on the EP. The audio currently has over 1 million views on YouTube.

Background[]

On June 27th, 2019, Poppy tweeted snippets of every song on Choke to promote the EP.

Theme[]

The song tells a story of a dystopian future where aliens have taken over and feed on human meat after disfiguring them; they force them to live and breed in compact environments before harvesting their flesh. This draws parallels to what is done to livestock in the meat-packing industry. In an interview with Gigwise, Poppy detailed that the song is also about the dangers of the world's mass-consumption of animal meat.

"Yeah. I am vegan. [...] "Meat" isn't about my consumption, though, it's about the world’s consumption and how dangerous the path the world as a whole is on, not respecting the earth and not asking enough questions. Because I don’t believe we're the only species here. I think there are higher powers and aliens and I do think they are walking among us. I do think there should be more thought behind our moves on earth. We only have one earth. I think there are a lot of careless mistakes that have been happening recently. If we could be a bit more mindful then maybe we can have the earth for a little bit longer" - Poppy in an interview with Gigwise[1]

The song exhibits thematic similarities with "Time Is Up" from Am I a Girl?, as both songs describe a dystopian future caused by humans.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Parasitic intergalactic savages
Land here in 2033
Having destroyed three planets before
The star force came to feed
I saw my brother devoured
A river of blood when they tore off his head
But now they've organized a system for harvesting human flesh

[Chorus]
Plug me into the feeding machine
Ten in a pen pressed against me
Cut out my tongue so that I can't scream
There's meat, there's meat on me
Antibiotics keep me alive
Now that everyone I love has died
Hang me up and strip me clean
There's meat, there's meat on me

[Verse 2]
You've heard stories about the free ones
The few who escape the aliens' grip
Living underground in sewer cities
In the damp and dark they resist
But I don't know if I believe it
When they caught me, there weren't many left
And they force us to breed in here
I just hope they kill me quick

[Chorus]
Plug me into the feeding machine
Ten in a pen pressed against me
Cut out my tongue so that I can't scream
There's meat, there's meat on me
Antibiotics keep me alive
Now that everyone I love has died
Hang me up and strip me clean
There's meat, there's meat on me

[Verse 3]
They grind up the sick to maximize efficiency
And mulch them back into our feed for optimal delivery
I hear the slaughterhouse screams
Out on the killing floor
And I hope they taste my adrenaline
Soak up my pus-filled sores

[Chorus]
Plug me into the feeding machine
Ten in a pen pressed against me
Cut out my tongue so that I can't scream
There's meat, there's meat on me
Wrap me up in cellophane
Labeled "organic", label me "grade A"
My tendon is caught between your teeth
There's meat, there's meat on me

[Outro]
There's meat, there's meat on me
There's meat, there's meat on me
There's meat, there's meat on me
There's meat, there's meat on me
