"Money" is a song by Poppy, released under the name That Poppy. It is the second track on her debut extended play Bubblebath and was later released as a promotional single alongside a music video on July 29th, 2016, which amassed 14 million views before it was taken down in 2018.[1]
Background[]
Tease and release[]
On February 3rd, 2016 a 13-second snippet was shared via Poppy's social media of the first version of the song as background music for a video of water with shower bombs along with fabric-made letters of "That Poppy Bubblebath" on top of the water, this served as promotion for the song prior to its release.[2]
The song was released on February 12th, 2016 alongside an audio video for the song days later on February 15th, 2016 uploaded on the ThatPoppyVEVO YouTube channel.[3]
On June 22th, 2016, Poppy confirmed the making of the music video after a fan asked her about it[4], the music video was later released without prior announcement on July 29th, 2016.
Versions history[]
There are two versions of this song, the first version of this song, released on February 12th, 2016 along the Bubblebath EP, contained an 18 second long electric guitar solo before the bridge.
Due to many people confusing Poppy's pronunciation of the word "happiness" to "a penis", a re-release of the song would be made on June 10th, 2016, making the first version of the song unavailable in almost all streaming plaforms and releasing a new version of the Bubblebath EP with this new version. On the second version of the song the volume of the backing vocals was lowered, the song had less saturation, the guitar solo was removed and the word "happiness" was re-recorded to avoid people mistaking that she said "a penis" instead, in this second version Poppy makes emphasis on the "H" to make it noticeable. The audio video for the first version was made unlisted the same day the music video was released.
The audio video remained unlisted until it was made private sometime in 2022, likely because it was a version of the song that was not used.
Version on "Simlish" language[]
Sometime in probably May or April 2016, a version of this song in a fictional language called "simlish" was recorded. Simlish is a fictional language used on the life simulation video games saga The Sims, this language would be used exclusively by the characters of the game which are called "sims". This version of the song is available on the downloadable content for fourth release of The Sims franchise titled The Sims 4 released in 2014 in the new "stuff" pack called "Kids Room Stuff". This stuff pack would be announced on June 21st, 2016 through a trailer YouTube video[5], however in the trailer no songs were announced. The pack was released on June 28th, 2016 along with the "simlish" version of this song whatsoever the song was released without prior announcement.[6] The pack was only available for PC until it was made available for game consoles on 2018. This version of the song is a game-exclusive release, meaning this version can only be officially heard on the PC or console versions of the pack on The Sims 4 game.
Music video's state[]
Sometime in April 2018, the official music video was taken down for a copyright infringement due to containing a GIF without the owner's consent, which were the animated eyebats used in various shots.[7] The music video was still archived and can be watched in the highest quality on Wayback Machine.[8] The music video was also available on Apple Music until it was made unavailable sometime in 2024 for unknown reasons.
Theme[]
This song treats satirically about Poppy's addiction to wealth and materialistic items. Poppy opens up about her past in this song, explaining that she did not have expensive items growing up, left her family at a young age and lived without a home. Since then, she has grown an obsession with money. The song's theme reflects on how one can become obsessed with money, and how it can do nearly everything. The chorus references the popular saying "money can't buy happiness", though Poppy questions it by asking "then why is it so fabulous?". Poppy also mentions how people around her during her life made her think that it was wrong to love money.
Music Video[]
The music video, uploaded onto her official VEVO channel, is visually similar to videos that are released on her regular channel. In the video, Poppy appears against a white backdrop lip-syncing the song in different shots. Most shots show Poppy in a different outfit receiving money handed to her, making little dance moves, or holding money and fanning herself with it. Multiple Japanese-style computer animations also appear throughout the video, creating a bubbly pink aesthetic.[1]
Lyrics[]
[Verse 1]
When I was a little girl
I used to think I was wrong for wanting diamonds and pearls
I never had anything, no Chanel or Tiffany like all the popular girls
They say the best things are free, but I don't get what they mean
'Cause I want everything
[Pre-Chorus]
And money doesn't grow on trees
You can't just plant a seed
You gotta work it out
[Chorus]
Gimme some of that cold cash
I want to stuff it in my couch
Come on, bring me those big stacks
I need them bricks to build my house
Give me all of that, all of that 'til the ATM runs out
If money can't buy happiness, then why is it so fabulous?
[Verse 2]
When I was only fifteen, I packed my bags and I said
Goodbye to mom and dad
I was afraid and alone, living without a home
Got rid of all I had
They say the best things are free, but I can't get what I need
Without some currency
[Pre-Chorus]
And money doesn't grow on trees
You can't just plant a seed
You gotta work it out
[Chorus]
Gimme some of that cold cash
I want to stuff it in my couch
Come on, bring me those big stacks
I need them bricks to build my house
Give me all of that, all of that 'til the ATM runs out
If money can't buy happiness, then why is it so fabulous?
[Bridge]
Make that money
Make my own money
Gonna make that money
Make my own money
Make that money
Make my own money
If money can't buy happiness, then why is it so fabulous?
[Chorus]
Gimme some of that cold cash
I want to stuff it in my couch
Come on, bring me those big stacks
I need them bricks to build my house
Give me all of that, all of that 'til the ATM runs out
If money can't buy happiness, then why is it so fabulous?
[Outro]
Gimme some of that cold cash
I want to stuff it in my couch
Come on, bring me those big stacks
I need them bricks to build my house
Give me all of that, all of that 'til the ATM runs out
If money can't buy happiness, then why is it so fabulous?
