Background

On May 12^th, 2022, Poppy posted a work-in-progress a capella snippet of the cover on her Instagram story.

On October 19^th, 2022, Poppy posted a snippet of the finished cover to her official TikTok. It was later deleted.

On April 17^th, 2023, Poppy posted an image to Instagram with the caption "🌬️I think I’ll.. take this hate and…." and subsequently followed by an Instagram story with the caption "annnd Spit".

On April 21^st, Poppy posted a GIF of her spitting to her Instagram with the caption "Spit 5/3", officially giving the cover a release date.

Theme

The original song was written as a direct response by Kittie towards misogynistic local bands and concert-goers that had low expectations of an "all-girl" band.
