"Hard Feelings" is a song by Poppy. It served as the fourth single from her second studio album Am I a Girl? and is the eighth track on the album. It was released on October 19th, 2018.

Background[]

Poppy released the song as a surprise single. She did not make an announcement about the song's release beforehand.

Theme[]

"Hard Feelings" is about Poppy questioning her identity and being as a whole, expressed through the metaphor of a robot questioning what its purpose is. This metaphor is likely a reference to Poppy's robot-like actions in her videos.

The song could possibly have a double meaning, also being a response to Mars Argo and her fanbase. The lyric "What crimes will you make me commit?" may be a response to fans calling her an abuser in the wake of Argo's lawsuit against Poppy and Titanic Sinclair. Additional lyrics include Poppy asking the listener if she is a replica of someone they once loved, which could be an allusion to the lawsuit pointing out many similarities between Poppy and Argo. Due to disagreeing with the accusations, she has "hard feelings".

Lyrics[]

[Intro]
Information, technologie
Qu'est-ce que tu veux
Information, technologie
What do you want from me?

[Verse 1]
Why do I have porcelain skin
With wires and electrics within?
So many questions
Tell me, what crimes will you make me commit?

[Pre-Chorus]
Am I a replica of someone that you loved?
(Someone you made me to replace)
Am I a replica of someone flesh and blood?
(Someone you made me to replace)

[Chorus]
Hard feelings, you got my circuitry bleeding
Am I a man or machine?
If I can never love, why do I have hard feelings?
Why do I have hard feelings?
Why do I have hard f—

[Verse 2]
My arms and my legs are so stiff
Is that the way you wanted it?
Why am I so different?
What crimes will you make me commit?

[Pre-Chorus]
Am I a replica of someone that you loved?
(Someone you made me to replace)
Am I a replica of someone flesh and blood?
(Someone you made me to replace)

[Chorus]
Hard feelings, you got my circuitry bleeding
Am I a man or machine?
If I can never love, why do I have hard feelings?
Why do I have hard feelings?
Why do I have hard feelings?

[Bridge]
Someone you made me to replace
Someone you made—
Someone you made me to replace

[Chorus]
Hard feelings, you got my circuitry bleeding
Am I a man or machine?
If I can never love, why do I have hard feelings?
Why do I have hard feelings?
Why do I have hard feelings?
