"The Attic" is a song by Poppy from her fifth studio album Zig. It is the ninth track on the album.

Background and Conception[]

Poppy revealed the title alongside the album's tracklist on on July 19th, 2023.

In a September 2023 interview with Kerrang! Poppy revealed a lyrical snippet of the song.[1]

Theme[]

"The Attic" details Poppy's struggles with her mental health, alluding to anxiety and trauma from a past relationship. She uses levels of a house as a metaphor for the human body. The basement and the first floor references the lower and upper body, and the upstairs and the attic refers to Poppy's head and brain respectively. She sings about her worries of her current relationship turning for the worst. Poppy also mentions her fear of abandonment, explicitly stating this stems from her father leaving her when she was a child.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
Can I put my bags down here?
How do I know you won't disappear?
Can I? Can I?
Would it be okay to take it slow?
Just tell me if you don't, you don't want me here
I was, I was
Always quick to rush in, always all or nothing
That's how it was, that's how it was
Shouldn't we just cut the cord?
If you could hurt me more than he ever did
This is no way to live

[Pre-Chorus]
Got my feet on the ground, but my head's up the stairs
(Don't jump in, I cannot swim)
And I'm spiralin' down, but I'm up in the, up in the air
(I can't take loss, can't lose again)
I'm up in the air
And it's fine in the basement and on the first floor
(If we jump in, I cannot swim)
Though my knees aren't shakin', my head's feelin' worse than before
(Can't lose again)
Is it worse than before?

[Chorus]
Don't think I can stand it, ah yeah
There's panic in the attic, panic in the attic
You're not the one who did me damage, not yet
But there's panic in the attic, panic in the attic
It's not your fault

[Verse 2]
Can I make the paradigm shift?
Or will you leave me like my father did
When I was a kid?
Can there be another way?
Is it too soon to say?
Can it be what it is?
Can you handle all this?

[Pre-Chorus]
Got my feet on the ground, but my head's up the stairs
(Don't jump in, I cannot swim)
And I'm spiralin' down, but I'm up in the, up in the air
(I can't take loss, can't lose again)
I'm up in the air
And it's fine in the basement and on the first floor
(If we jump in, I cannot swim)
Though my knees aren't shakin', my head's feelin' worse than before
(Can't lose again)
Is it worse than before?

[Chorus]
Don't think I can stand it, ah yeah
There's panic in the attic, panic in the attic
You're not the one who did me damage, not yet
But there's panic in the attic, panic in the attic
It's not your fault
