"The Holy Mountain" is a song by Poppy from her second extended play "Choke". It is the fifth and final track on the EP.

Background

On June 27th, 2019, Poppy tweeted snippets of every song on "Choke" to promote the EP.

Theme

"The Holy Mountain" is likely based on the 1973 film of the same name, in which a Mexican master leads a figure resembling Jesus Christ and other disciples to a mountain of immortal wise men, as well as a biblical quote in which God refers to heaven as his "holy mountain".[1] In an interview with Gigwise, Poppy stated that "it's a message to people who have been ignoring signals and hopefully it inspires people to pay attention to the higher consciousness. You're given one life and one chance."[2]

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
When I met God
He looked me in the face and told me to wait
When I met God
He told me that the human race was wasting away again

[Pre-Chorus]
He took my hand and showed the way
To his sacred place

[Chorus]
It was the only time we got to climb the holy mountain
All the doors that opened led to the fountain
If you know the way that takes you to the mountain
Let yourself be blown away

[Verse 2]
So I said to God, "How do I change my ways?"
He laughed in my face
And I screamed at God, "How dare you put me in my place"
He started to pray for me

[Pre-Chorus]
He took my hand and showed the way
To his sacred place

[Chorus]
It was the only time we got to climb the holy mountain
All the doors that opened led to the fountain
If you know the way that takes you to the mountain
Let yourself be blown away
It was the only time we got to climb the holy mountain
All the doors that opened led to the fountain
If you know the way that takes you to the mountain
Let yourself be blown away
