"What If I" was a demo that Poppy made during her "Moriah Poppy" era for Brett Manning.
Background
The song was posted to her YouTube channel "thatPoppyTV" in early 2012. Brett Manning also recorded his own version of the song, which was officially released in late 2014.
Theme
"What If I" is about questioning a lover. The person describes ways they could have altered situations so their relationship wouldn't have existed. However, since they didn't do this in the past, they won't in the present. Their lover is described to have positively impacted them, but they wonder how things would have been different if they met their partner on another day.
